Evictions protections extend through 9/1/2020

A Message Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez:
California Secretary of the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency

“COVID-19 has affected so many Californians, especially many who were already struggling to pay their rent. The Judicial Council’s recent decision to extend the emergency eviction protections through 9/1/2020 was a welcomed decision, but it’s clear that many renters will be at risk of eviction in the coming months without resources from the federal government and further protections. Housing is key.”

We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many Californians to lose income or lose their jobs, making it hard for them to make ends meet. For those struggling to pay their rents or mortgages because of COVID-19, there are options. The first thing they need to do is start working with their landlords or lenders immediately.

Most lenders are offering forbearance to homeowners who cannot pay their mortgages because of COVID-19. Renters need to know that the Judicial Council’s moratorium on evictions remains in place through September 1, 2020.

In the meantime, the Legislature is working on a plan to provide further help to renters and homeowners.

Many local governments have their own eviction restrictions in place. Please take the time to review and share local governments’ resources and support. This list of resources is being continually updated:
